Impact Inverter (70kW) Demonstration
Prototype
===
AETS 70kW
POWER INVERTER MODULE
GMATV TORRANCE
===
An early example of Hughes / GMATV / AETS demonstration
prototype inverter. Likely a display display piece, but
appears otherwise complete. Beyond receiving this piece from a
Hughes Torrance engineer we have not seen any mention and/or
images of it in Hughes/GM period literature.
The display tag is our only clue as to its date, stating:
---
"AETS 70kW
POWER INVERTER MODULE
GMATV TORRANCE"
---
AETS stands for 'Advanced Electronic Transportation
Systems' and GMATV stands for 'General Motors Advanced
Technology Vehicles'. Both GMATV and AETS were
formed in March 1994.
GM had acquired Hughes Aircraft in 1990 and formed GM
Hughes Electronics to support the developement
of the revolutionary GM Impact / EV1 electric vehicle, which
evolved from the GM Impact concept vehicle.
A dedicated division called HPCS 'Hughes Power Control
Systems' was established in Torrance, California, in
1991. The division set up operations in a former military
electronics plant in Torrance to transition aerospace technology
into the automotive sector. Its primary mandate was
mass-producing advanced electronics, such as inductive
charging networks (eventually labeled as the
Magne-Charger) and power traction inverters for GM's landmark
Impact electric vehicle prototype which, in 1996, became
the production-level 1997 GM EV1.
