Aero' Camera-Mirrors - v2

Here is one of our favorite modifications for the
Model S.  Each mod' is intended to increase the vehicle's aerodynamic
efficiencies.

We  generally understand that exterior door mirrors reduce
the aerodynamic efficiency and subsequent vehicle range by +/- 5%.  Since
the NHTSA will not allow manufacturers to sell new vehicles with this
important modification (c2013), we
decided to retrofit our own LCD camera rear-view mirror system.

Our initial design goal was to keep all components 'inside' the vehicle (v1); however, after a
few months of testing we decided that it would be best to mount the cameras
on the exterior.  v2 is currently installed, operating and working
wonderfully..

'S' Range Projections

v2. Here is our second version of the camera-mirror.

We have utilized the existing mirror base and trim, and added a 3/4" aluminum camera housing.

The Teslas radio antenna remains outside in the mounting bracket, and the satellite positioning antenna has been moved inside the cockpit against the A pillar glass.

We selected cameras with a 170 degree viewing angle which allow vehicles in the blind-spot to be 50% viable in the camera at the same time 50% of the vehicle is visible parallel to the front door.

All systems are operating nicely and we expect this will be our final version of this modification. This version was installed in 2013 and remains in place in 2022. We have refreshed the cameras once in that period, in 2021, due to moister penetration and sun damage.

It is generally understood that door mirrors reduce range, ICE or EV, by 3 to 5%. We are expecting that this modification combined with the bubble nose and aero wheels, will nudge our range a tad upward.
