Phoenix SUT History

The Phoenix SUT (Sport Utility Truck) is a full sized
ZEV (zero emissions vehicle) and is one of +/-5 purpose built
by Pheonix Motor Cars on a Ssangyong
chassis in the early 2000s time frame.  The SUT was
intended to be an early competitor to Tesla Motors gen1 Roadster
but did not survive beyond prototype development.  It is believed that
three to five prototypes were built with varying
specifications and only two fully built examples are known to exist.
One example remains with Pheonix Motor Cars in Ontario, CA
and the second is held here at the Beata Collection.

Phoenix Motorcars had intended to disrupt the post CARB EV
market with SUT production but filed for Chapter 11 in
April 2009.  Pheonix had planned to use rolling chassis provided
by Korean automotive manufacture Ssangyong, Korea’s fourth
largest automaker, as the basis
for its electric vehicle line in the US.  Phoenix suppliers included
UQM Technologies, which had, at the time, 25 years of experience
in building electric high-performance motors,
generators, and controllers.  The SUT’s  target batteries were supplied
by Altair Nanotechnology and the vehicle integration was
to be completed by Boshart Engineering.

Pheonix had planned to roll-out 6,000 fleet units annually
beginning in 2008, and public units beginning in 2010.

The Beata Collection’s prototype 571 is fitted with an Iron Phosphate
K2 traction battery pack and a Colorado based
Victor brand lithium BMS.
